Jonathan Smart Gallery has been a cornerstone for showcasing contemporary art in Christchurch for over 25 years. After moving to a re-purposed space on Buchan St after years on High St, the gallery plays an integral role in the creation of what is steadily shaping up to be a new arts trail for future Christchurch.
For First Thursdays, the gallery will be open late and invites you to join them for a tipple and a look at their upcoming exhibition of photography by Anne Noble and paintings by Kristy Gorman.
Anne Noble is one of New Zealand's most widely recognised and respected photographers. Since 2001 she has focused a lot of her work on Antarctica, exploring and critiquing the cultural construction of place. Bitch in Slippers references the habit in Antarctica of naming every heavy machine after a woman in the male dominated climate of Scott Base.
Kristy Gorman is an Ilam graduate. Her subtle and evocative paintings meander between abstact and figurative; quiet studies in colour and tone will contrast and converse with Noble's photographs.
The exhibition runs from Tuesday September 30 until Saturday October 25.
