Originally from Austria, Jinx migrated to New Zealand in 2006 and is currently based in Christchurch after spending some years in Wellington.
Jinx is a self taught artist, working mostly with acrylics on paper, canvas and wood. Her paintings aim to reflect life through a mirror of dreams - the dimension of symbols and metaphors that disguise the wonderful and the terrible, our fears, wishes and hopes.
For First Thursdays, Jinx will be joining her good friend and art ally, Xoe Hall in residence at Embassy. These two badass artists will be making fresh new works on the night - transforming the shop from an economic hub to a creative one. Make sure to stop by and chat with these artists about their work and experiences!
Jason Ware is a Christchurch based artist who graduated from the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts in 2011. His practice is strongly process based, he works with tangible - often reclaimed - materials in collage and sculpture. Ware's work often sees traces of the activity of making left behind, adding texture and narrative to the work.
"My work is informed by physical and metaphysical concerns and I attempt to entice the viewer to envisage ‘extrapolated space’, the imagined space beyond the real."
There is a sensitivity to materials in Ware's practice - to their stories, histories and possibilities. Jason's work, Vug, will be hosted by Westende Jewellers at 421 Colombo St. The artist has taken various elements from his surroundings and combined them in a nice cabinet...
Clare Logan is an artist living and working in Christchurch. Her studio practice incorporates a range of mediums with a predominant focus on painting and drawing. Through her work she explores themes around the human relationship to landscape, and associated inherent tensions. Memory, unreality, and modes of perception are central themes in her work.
For the upcoming First Thursdays Clare is making a video projection work. It will serve as a visual reflection on engagement with the physical landscape, following a series of her own movements through areas of the landscape of Canterbury.
The work aims to explore the place landscape holds in collective cultural memory, alongside the intimacy of an individual physical foray through it. By staging a number of specific personal interactions with land, she seeks to investigate human beings' relationships with landscapes and the shifting nature of modes of engagement.
This work promises to be immersive and seductive; inviting contemplation of the cultural and individual engagement with landscapes. Join us to see this work inside, next door to Admire Interiors, on the corner of Durham and Battersea St.

Photograph from Fragments of Other Peoples Lives, Doc Ross 2014
Doc Ross is a widely exhibited and collected artist - both internationally and around New Zealand. His work is heralded as poignant and sensitive, his lens capturing and framing images from the uncanny everyday that slip by unnoticed by many.
As part of the Christchurch Arts Festival in August last year, the Canterbury Museum held a large exhibition by Doc Ross. 37 consisted of portraits of local people reflecting on their experiences of the 22 February 2011 earthquake. As Doc Ross describes it: ‘This is a collection of portraits of 37 affected people and their stories, edited down to just as many words as there were seconds of shaking.’
Gallery 464 has operated as a personal exhibition and studio space for Doc since 1998. First Thursdays sees this sleek yet intimate space host a new show. Doc Ross' exhibition Fragments of Other Peoples Lives showcases 15 images along with a limited edition artists book, containing 74 duotone images.
Made over a two month period in London this past winter, this series of photographs was a much needed diversion for Doc from the work he has been doing in Christchurch over the past few years. They reflect a long time interest Doc has had in the photographs and philosophies of the american photographer Garry Winogrand, and its resulting influence on his work.

Our second showcased artist and notorious Christchurch art enabler, is Gaby Montejo. Cuban born, Gaby has been enriching the Christchurch arts scene with his engaging, energetic and often irreverent sculptural and performance works since moving here in 2006. Working with organisations such as Life in Vacant Spaces and Gap Filler, Gaby continues to be an integral part of keeping the arts alive and flourishing through his involvement in numerous transitional projects in the city.
Through A Place to Build Art Projects, Gaby runs the Christchurch Social Street Residency, inviting artists from around New Zealand and the world to take up a unique caravan residency in various locations in the CBD. Currently hosting its 8th resident, this unassuming vintage caravan offers an inside perspective to the transitional nature of our city to 'outsiders' and invites fresh glimpses and understandings to locals and visitors alike.
Alongside Lucy Matthews, Gaby initiated the fluid and inclusive arts collective - The Social in 2012. Two summers in a row, The Social saw a series of site specific installations, interactive artworks and performances take place in and around Re:Start and various vacant sites in the CBD. For more information on these visit http://chchsocial.tumblr.com/.
Gaby's creative practice is one where human relations often play an essential role. This philosophy means that a piece of art should have its origins in a sort-of friendly trust, and perhaps needs people to trigger things to happen - making for a sculpture of the active kind; alive and real.
For First Thursdays, Gaby is putting on an event entitled Mothers beginning 6:30pm sharp at the Honey Pot Café on Colombo St. This will NOT be a performance; it is more of a presentation, or celebration of sorts. It will be an event not to miss, so be on time and dress snappy!
