We are thrilled to welcome Courtney Spargo to the First Thursdays programme. An intricate and elegant site specific installation will showcase the labor intensive process that this artist has become known for.
Courtney Spargo is an emerging New Zealand Sculpture and Installation Artist currently based in Christchurch . Informed by a material investigation that stems from the process of production itself, Spargo's practice is an exploration through notions related to the arts and craft movement such as time, labor and the trace of the artist's hand in process. All of which is a foundation to explore larger concepts that enhance space in relation to specificity of site, context and material interaction that both obstruct and invite physical interaction.
Although often minimal in aesthetic her installations are subtle in the way they entice the audience to engage with its tactile qualities through an overworked repetitive nature. Taking note from Lucy Lippard's essay entitled "Making Something from Nothing" her work engages with mundane materials of the everyday
For Welcome to the Jungle Spargo has produced a site specific temporary Installation that occupies the entranceway of Filigree and directly engages with the support structure of the slatted beams, in particular through encasing the structure.
Through webbed like walls, I intend to create a new spatial construct that consists of interwoven pvc hand braided rope/thread, creating a chaotic quietness. The panels will create a woven box. However they will have both negative and positive space, allowing the view to move within the installation.
Spargo's installation, Partially Encased, is in response to the construction jungle we currently live in, with a particular focus on the CBD. The Installation is a reference to the cranes, fences, scaffolding and all of the barriers we come into contact with when travelling through our city. Her intention is to create a cordoned space that is both constricted but accessible, complex whilst being minimal.
